Founded in the summer of 1969 by Louisville natives Janis Carter and Ben Watkins, the event started at Algonquin Park in the aftermath of the 1968 riots. The initial goal was simple: unite the community through pickup games and family-style picnics during a difficult time. The concept rapidly exploded in popularity. By 1971, the booming tournament relocated to Shawnee Park, evolving into an elite proving ground where pro players, college phenoms, and playground legends battled for neighborhood pride.
Winning the Dirt Bowl means etching your name alongside local basketball royalty like Darrell Griffith. Over fifty years later, the storied tournament remains beautifully unchanged—a vibrant community event that is part basketball tournament, part block party, and part family reunion.
